Gori Chen, Mountain summit in Thingbu Circle, India.
Gori Chen is a mountain summit reaching 6,488 meters (21,300 feet) in the Eastern Himalayas with multiple glacial formations and three distinct peaks. The terrain displays steep slopes and extensive snow-covered areas typical of high alpine environments.
The Bailey-Morshead expedition in 1913 mapped key routes through the Gori Chen region and established what became the Bailey Trail. These early explorations provided the first detailed geographical knowledge of this Eastern Himalayan area.
The mountain is known locally as Sa-Nga-Phu and shapes the natural landscape that people in Arunachal Pradesh see from many directions. This geographical role connects the region's communities to the surrounding peaks and valleys.
Climbing this summit requires advanced mountaineering skills and proper acclimatization to high altitude. Access routes from Thingbu Circle are well-established but demand good weather conditions and solid physical preparation.
Indian civilian climbers from the Mountaineers' Association of Krishnanagar reached the main peak in 2024. This achievement marked an important moment for mountaineering in this remote Himalayan region.
