Nagliai Nature Strict Reserve, Nature reserve in Neringa Municipality, Lithuania
Nagliai Nature Strict Reserve is a protected area between Juodkrantė and Pervalka covering roughly 1,680 hectares with sand dunes, forests, and wetland areas. The land contains several different natural environments that together support a diverse ecosystem.
The landscape was shaped over centuries by strong winds, with the Gray Dunes exposing layers of old soils and remnants of former settlements buried under sand. This natural reshaping of the land continues to the present day.
The reserve forms part of the Curonian Spit, a UNESCO World Heritage site showing how nature and human settlements coexist in this region. Visitors come to understand the relationship between ever-shifting dunes and the communities that have adapted to live alongside them.
A marked walking path of about one kilometer leads visitors from the parking area at the 32nd kilometer of the Smiltynė-Nida road through the reserve. Access is straightforward and the route is clearly marked for easy navigation.
The reserve contains deep gullies carved by wind erosion that form natural corridors through the dunes where forest vegetation grows in sheltered areas. These distinctive formations develop through the interplay of wind forces and plant growth over extended periods.
