Saga Oseberg, Viking ship replica in Tønsberg, Norway
Saga Oseberg is a full wooden reconstruction of an original ninth-century Viking ship measuring 21.52 meters in length, located in Tønsberg harbor. The replica demonstrates the exact building methods and structural details of the authentic vessel from that ancient period.
Craftsmen constructed this vessel between 2010 and 2012 using only tools and techniques available during the Viking Age itself. The construction aimed to show exactly how Norse seafarers built their ships in ancient times.
The vessel serves as a center for learning about Viking Age shipbuilding methods, with regular demonstrations of traditional Norse maritime craftsmanship. Visitors can watch skilled workers use the same techniques that sailors once relied on for their voyages.
Visitors can observe the ship and take part in construction activities using traditional Viking tools at Vikingodden from Thursday through Sunday. It helps to check conditions before visiting and allow enough time to explore the site properly.
The reconstruction team manufactured over 2000 iron rivets according to medieval specifications to connect the wooden planks of the ship. These rivets represent an overlooked craft achievement that visitors often miss when viewing the finished vessel.
