Tønsberg canal bridge, Heritage road bridge in Tønsberg, Norway
The Tønsberg canal bridge consists of two movable sections spanning 89 meters across the Sten Canal, connecting the mainland with Nøtterøy island.
The bridge, completed in 1957, represents a significant advancement in Norwegian infrastructure development, connecting previously separated parts of Tønsberg Municipality.
The bridge's control tower and mechanical components demonstrate mid-20th century Norwegian engineering methods while serving as a recognized heritage structure.
During summer, the bridge opens five times daily at specific intervals: 9:05 AM, 12:05 PM, 2:05 PM, 6:05 PM, and 8:05 PM.
The double-leaf bascule mechanism uses counterweights beneath the road surface to lift both spans, allowing maritime vessels to pass through the canal.
