Tønsberg, Administrative municipality in Vestfold og Telemark, Norway
Tønsberg is a municipality in southeastern Norway at the head of Tønsbergfjord with several population centers such as Barkåker and Husøy spread across 329 square kilometers. The administration covers schools, health services, and social facilities for residents of the region.
The town was founded in 871, making it one of the oldest settlements in Norway. In the 13th century, Castrum Tunsbergis rose here as the largest medieval fortress in the country.
The name of this municipality reaches back to Viking times and has been kept through more than a thousand years of urban history. Along the harbor and in surrounding settlements, the connection to the sea remains visible today through boathouses and maritime traditions.
The municipality is connected to the region through main roads and ferry links and offers access to different coastal sections. A visit can be combined well with walks along the fjord coast or explorations of surrounding villages.
The Oseberg Mound within the municipality contained a fully preserved 9th-century Viking ship with numerous everyday objects on board. The workshops and shipyards of the region still produce metalware and silver products following old traditions.
