Sem Church, Medieval parish church in Tønsberg Municipality, Norway
Sem Church is a medieval parish church in Tønsberg Municipality, built from stone with a long nave design and a brick porch at the west end. The interior holds 211 seats and reflects changes made through various restoration periods over time.
The church was constructed around 1100 on the site of a former wooden structure and became a major church serving the Vestfold region. Significant restoration work took place during 1690, 1770, 1924, 1955, and 2012 to maintain the building.
The church retains its original pulpit from 1592 and an altar from the 17th century, reflecting the architectural elements of medieval Norway.
The church contains seating inside and displays furnishings from different periods. Visitors should check ahead as the building may be closed for services or events at certain times.
Beside the church stands Det wedelske gravkapell, a burial chapel connected to the Jarlsberg Manor family. This separate building offers insight into the noble ties of the region.
