Sommet de Dormillouse

Sommet de Dormillouse rises to 2,505 meters (8,218 feet) in the French Alps and offers views across the Ubaye Valley and the Serre-Ponçon reservoir far below. The summit area features rocky slopes and alpine meadows crossed by marked hiking routes of varying difficulty.

An early 20th-century railway project left unfinished viaducts and tunnels near the summit that were later incorporated into hiking paths. These structures remain part of the landscape and are encountered along routes today.

Local communities have used the mountain paths leading to this summit for generations to travel between high-altitude settlements. These routes remain visible today as they wind through the landscape.

Reaching the summit requires solid hiking experience and good physical fitness, with routes starting from Le Lauzet-Ubaye through marked trails. Mountain weather at this altitude can shift quickly, so proper gear and preparation are essential.

Two mountain lakes called Lacs du Col Bas sit near the summit and remain frozen during winter months at elevations above 2,100 meters (6,890 feet). These water bodies create a striking seasonal landscape that changes dramatically throughout the year.
