Terril n°2, Mining slag heap summit in Ruitz, France.
Terril number 2 is a coal mining slag heap standing at about 100 meters high and covering roughly 12 hectares near Ruitz. Its conical shape creates a distinctive landform in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais mining landscape.
The site developed through the gradual accumulation of coal waste from pit number 6 of the Bruay mines over several decades. The structure represents the scale of mining operations that once dominated the region.
The slag heap represents the industrial past of the mining region and serves as a landmark that shapes how local people see their territory. It stands as a physical reminder of the work that once defined daily life in this area.
The site is accessible for hiking and walking with views across the former mining region. Sturdy footwear is recommended as the slopes have varying surface conditions.
The heap was left untouched in its original state rather than being mined for materials later, allowing plants and animals to adapt to the specific conditions and create their own ecosystem. This natural succession has made it an unexpected refuge for adapted species.
