Terril n°9, Mining spoil summit in Haillicourt, France.
Terril No. 9 is an artificial hill created from mining waste and built up from layered rock deposits. A spiral road winds up to the summit, where visitors can see across the surrounding former mining territory.
This heap grew from waste rock of the Fosse 2 bis mine during the region's coal extraction period. In 2012, the site became part of UNESCO World Heritage recognition for the northern French mining basin.
The mound shows how industrial waste lands can become places where people gather today. Visitors find a transformed landscape that locals now use for walking and enjoying views.
The spiral road is accessible on foot, though muddy patches can appear after rain on the upper sections. Bring sturdy shoes and allow time to enjoy the view from the top without rushing.
A vineyard grows at the peak, an unexpected use for former industrial ground. This planting shows how the site has been creatively revived beyond its mining past.
