Rocher du Diable

The Rocher du Diable rises to approximately 540 meters above sea level, featuring a distinctive sandstone formation topped with a gazebo that provides panoramic views over the surrounding valleys and forested hills of the Vosges region.

The original German construction on the summit was destroyed in 1940 during the Battle of Donon, and was later replaced by the current gazebo structure that serves as a memorial to the strategic military importance this elevated position held during past conflicts.

Local legends associate the rocky outcrop with mysterious events and supernatural occurrences, reflecting the regional folklore tradition of attributing dramatic geological formations to encounters between divine forces and malevolent spirits in Alsatian culture.

Hikers can reach the summit via well-marked trails, though certain sections require careful attention to follow the recommended route correctly, and visitors should consult weather conditions before departure as visibility can be affected by seasonal changes.

The descent follows a different marked trail system leading toward the Grand Soldat and Grand Rommelstein, allowing explorers to create circular hiking routes that connect multiple scenic viewpoints across the Vosges mountain range.
