Port d'hiver - Passay is a scenic viewpoint on the shore of Lac de Grand Lieu, in the village of Passay in La Chevrolière. From this spot, visitors look directly over the water, which changes in surface depending on the season.
Passay has long been the only village with direct access to the lake, used by fishermen for centuries. Two separate docks were built over time to cope with the water level changes: one for winter use and one for summer.
In Passay, a small village on the shore, fishermen have long shaped daily life around the lake's rhythms. A nearby Fishermen's House shows visitors how local fishing traditions developed alongside this body of water.
The viewpoint can be visited year-round and requires only a short walk of a few minutes in summer, while in winter the water is visible almost immediately on arrival. Picnic tables and a playground are available on site, making it a practical stop for families.
The lake nearly doubles in surface area during winter, becoming the largest natural lake on flat ground in France. This change is especially visible from the winter dock, where the water can reach almost to the edge of the path.
