Kasteel Maxburg, 19th century castle in Meer, Belgium

Kasteel Maxburg is a 19th century castle in Meer featuring three distinct blocks arranged across four bays. The structure contains a basement, two main floors, and elaborate slate roofing that covers the entire building.

Maximiliaan Van den Bergh, an Antwerp shipbroker and distillery owner, purchased the Heyhoef estate in 1853 and subsequently built the castle. The building has since defined the area's character as a symbol of its founder's prosperity.

The chapel on the grounds dates from 1887 and holds stained glass windows showing Saint Hubert and Emperor Constantine. These windows were crafted by artist P. De Craene and reflect the religious values of the family who shaped this place.

The castle underwent extensive restoration between 1994 and 1999, transforming it from a deteriorating structure into a secured historical site. It sits on Maxburgdreef and remains accessible to visitors interested in architecture and heritage landscapes.

A granite stone at the entrance bears text from Jonathan Swift, linking the place to agricultural history during the industrial era. This unusual detail marks the evolution of the land during a period of significant change.
