Musée de la meunerie, Mill museum in Le Molay-Littry, France
The Musée de la Meunerie is a mill museum in Le Molay-Littry with a working water mill from the 19th century. The mill has grinding stones in the upper chamber and a waterwheel powered by the Siette stream.
The original Mill of Marcy was donated in 1042 to Cerisy Abbey and operated for centuries as a working facility. It continued until 1952 when the last miller stopped operations.
The museum shows how millers worked and the tools they used in their daily routines. The preserved buildings and machines tell the story of a craft that has largely disappeared.
Visiting is easiest in the afternoon when you have enough time to explore the different rooms at your own pace. The museum grounds are compact and can be walked through comfortably.
The waterwheel was renewed in 2009 and features 36 buckets that turn with the flowing water. This restoration brought the mill back to life and demonstrates how the machinery originally functioned.
