This museum grew from a drawing and sculpture school founded in 1833 under director Étienne Bouhot, who gathered initial artworks from fellow artists. The institution evolved from this educational foundation into its present form as a public collection.
The collection includes paintings from the 15th to 20th centuries by artists like Vignon, Corot, Boilly, and original plasters from Augustin Dumont's workshop.
The museum sits within Semur-en-Auxois town center and is easily reached on foot while exploring the town. Plan to visit in the afternoon or morning, as opening hours are limited during the week.
The collection features an internationally recognized geological section containing thousands of mineral and fossil samples found locally. Many visitors are surprised by the prominence of ammonites and other prehistoric remains among the displays.
