Praia dos Carneiros, Beach in Tamandaré, Brazil
Praia dos Carneiros is a beach in Tamandaré in the state of Pernambuco that runs for about three and a half kilometers along the coast and is lined with tall coconut palms. The warm water appears in pale turquoise and forms shallow natural pools at low tide among the offshore reefs.
The coastal area was part of sugarcane estates since the 17th century and remained a remote stretch without permanent settlement for long periods. The chapel was built in 1721 and served the few inhabitants and sailors as a place of worship at the mouth of the Rio Formoso.
Fishermen from the region continue to use traditional wooden boats to bring in their catch from the river delta along the coast. The chapel of São Benedito from the early 18th century stands right at the northern stretch of sand and remains in use today for weddings and services.
The beach can be reached through marked access points near the seafront establishments, and parking spaces are available for cars. At low tide, walking among the reefs is easy, while high tide invites swimming in the open sea.
The reefs along the shore offer natural aquariums at low tide, where you can observe small colorful fish and occasionally starfish among the corals. Some visitors come here to marry in the small chapel by the water, with the ceremony taking place right next to the sea.
