Puits d'Enfer

Puits d'Enfer is a waterfall site where a stream flows over rocky features within a valley surrounded by thick woodlands. The landscape holds different plant communities that create visual variety across the terrain.

The site gained official protected status in 1927, making it one of the first natural areas safeguarded in the Deux-Sèvres department. This early recognition demonstrates how long the location has been valued by the region.

The name Puits d'Enfer, meaning Well of Hell, comes from an old tale about a farmer and his cart that vanished into the turbulent waters long ago. This legend shapes how local people talk about and think of the place.

The area is accessible via marked hiking paths and has ample parking space for visitors. A covered picnic area provides a comfortable spot to rest and have meals.

The valley brings together four different plant types in one place: Atlantic, riverside, sub-Mediterranean, and highland species. This mix makes it an unusual location for seeing diverse plant life.
