Muhu Museum, museum in Koguva, Estonia
Muhu Museum is a local history museum in the village of Koguva on Muhu Island in Estonia, spread across several traditional farmhouses and buildings. The collection includes historical household items, farm tools, furniture, and preserved schoolrooms that document how people lived and worked on the island.
The museum was founded in 1973 after writer Juhan Smuul, born on the island, passed away. In 1979 it received additional land for expansion, and in 1990 it was renamed Muhu Museum when it became part of Muhu parish.
The museum displays handmade textiles and crafts created by women from Muhu Island across generations. These objects show how local people preserved their traditions through the everyday items they made and used.
The museum is located across several buildings throughout the village, with signs guiding visitors to each section. The best time to visit is between May and September when weather is mild and the museum operates more days per week.
The museum includes the childhood home of Juhan Smuul, a celebrated Estonian writer and poet who gained recognition for his works about the sea and island life. His deep connection to this place inspired much of his writing and made him a significant figure in Estonian literature.
