Hanstholm fortress, History museum in Thisted Municipality, Denmark.
Hanstholm fortress is a history museum in Thisted Municipality centered around the ruins of a massive coastal fortification with underground bunkers, concrete walls, and artillery positions. The complex displays the military structure of a defense installation spread across the site.
German forces built this fortress between 1940 and 1945 as an important part of the Atlantic Wall defense system. The installation was then a key point in the defensive line against possible invasions.
The exhibitions show personal belongings and photographs from people who lived here during the occupation. You learn through these objects how daily life looked and what people experienced during that time.
The site is well accessible and offers parking for visitors plus an information center on location. You can walk freely across the outdoor area or join guided tours to learn more about the individual bunkers.
At this site stand some of the largest preserved guns from this period in Northern Europe with their original barrels over 38 centimeters in diameter. These monumental weapons give you a direct impression of the power and scale of the fortification.
