Karol Bagh Tehsil, Commercial district in Central Delhi, India
Karol Bagh is a densely built commercial and residential neighborhood in central Delhi, crossed by a tight grid of streets. The area holds specialized markets for clothing, electronics, and jewelry, along with dozens of hotels and restaurants serving mainly Indian food.
The area developed as a suburb of Delhi in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and became a preferred residential zone. The arrival of refugees after the 1947 Partition deeply changed its character and helped establish it as a trading hub.
Karol Bagh is known for its rows of bridal wear shops and jewelry traders, concentrated along Ajmal Khan Road. In the weeks before wedding season, the footpaths fill with families choosing saris, lehengas, and gold ornaments.
Karol Bagh Metro station on the Blue Line sits right in the neighborhood and is the easiest way to arrive. The streets get very crowded during the day, so a morning visit is more comfortable when shops are just opening.
Gaffar Market, a maze-like complex tucked inside Karol Bagh, has been one of Delhi's go-to spots for used and refurbished electronics for decades. Many of the devices sold there come from abroad and are rarely found in regular Indian stores.
