Heizhaus
The Heizhaus is a large industrial building in Strasshof an der Nordbahn that now functions as a museum and houses about 80 locomotives along with over 180 wagons. The building itself retains its original condition with preserved water towers, coal lifts, and water cranes that were once essential for operating the steam locomotives.
The Heizhaus was completed in 1947 after World War Two, when the site was under Soviet control, and served as a locomotive maintenance facility until 1976 when the last steam locomotives were retired. The club 1. öSEK saved the site from demolition and opened the current museum in 1984.
The building takes its name from its original purpose as a heating facility for the locomotive workshops. The place shows how central railways were to Austria's growth and reflects the daily work of people who maintained these machines.
The museum is open on weekends from 10 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon from late October through late December and again from early February through late March. There are walking paths around the grounds to see the trains up close, and on special events visitors can take nostalgic rides aboard historic trains.
Some of the locomotives here are still functional and can be operated during special events, allowing actual steam rides. The museum also houses model railway layouts in different gauges, including garden railways and H0 scale displays.
