Aggstein Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Wachau Valley, Austria
Aggstein Castle is a castle ruin perched on a rocky ridge high above the Danube in the Wachau Valley. The structure spreads along the slope and offers views of the river and surrounding valley from several vantage points.
The castle was rebuilt in 1429 under the direction of Jörg Scheck von Wald and served to control river trade. Later, fortifications were added to protect it against attackers.
The castle ruins show features from different periods that visitors can notice as they walk around. These architectural layers tell of the many merchants and travelers who passed through this valley.
The ruins are reachable via marked hiking trails that lead from the valley up to the site. The climb takes about half an hour and the paths are generally easy to walk, though sturdy footwear is recommended.
A striking feature is a narrow rocky ledge called Rosengärtlein that hangs over a steep cliff. This spot was notorious as a place where prisoners were held under dizzying conditions.
