Buvette, French restaurant in Pigalle, Paris
Buvette is a small restaurant at 28 Rue Henry Monnier with two rooms: a front area with a marble counter as the center and a back dining area with tables for groups. Throughout the space, baskets of fresh ingredients, old furniture, and wine bottles give the rooms an improvised, come-as-you-are character.
The restaurant was founded in 2012 by American chef Jody Williams as an offshoot of her successful New York location. The Paris branch brought the New York style directly to the 9th arrondissement and quickly became a popular hangout in the neighborhood.
The place reflects Parisian dining style: guests sit close together at small tables, food comes at any hour of the day, and service remains casual and friendly. This way of eating is typical of French cafe culture, where meals are less formal and time is spent more in conversation with others.
The place operates without reservations and is open almost every day with varying hours depending on the day of the week. You can simply walk in, find a spot to sit, and order whenever it suits you.
The menu is not posted on a wall but instead explained by waiters from memory, because it changes constantly based on what is available at the market that day. This approach forces you to listen and interact with staff rather than simply selecting from a list.
