Souley Vegan, Vegan soul food restaurant in Oakland, United States
Souley Vegan is a vegan restaurant serving Southern comfort food made entirely from plants within a brick building. The menu features seitan steaks, crispy tofu waffles, and creamy cashew-based macaroni and cheese.
Chef Tamearra Dyson founded the restaurant in 2009 after beginning her cooking career at local farmers markets. She financed the project entirely on her own without backing from external investors.
The restaurant partners with local Black-owned farms and creates its own vegan sauces, plant-based proteins, and dairy alternatives. This approach allows the kitchen to honor the roots of soul food cooking while keeping everything plant-based.
The restaurant is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11:00 AM to 10:30 PM, with extended hours on Friday and Saturday until 11:30 PM. Dining is easier to enjoy when arriving during off-peak times or making a reservation in advance.
The building dates from 1857 and is among Oakland's oldest structures, featuring simplified Italianate design. This historic setting creates an unexpected pairing with the contemporary plant-based food served inside.
