Iroha, Beef cutlet restaurant in Toshima-ku, Japan
Iroha is a beef cutlet restaurant that prepares thin, crispy breaded beef and serves it on heated stone slabs where diners can finish cooking to their preference. The meal comes complete with raw vegetables, miso soup, rice, and potato salad.
The restaurant opened in 2014 and introduced a modern take on beef cutlets, which originated during Japan's Meiji era when Western culinary techniques first arrived. This fusion approach combines European cooking methods with Japanese presentation and flavor profiles.
The restaurant follows traditional Japanese dining customs by offering unlimited rice refills and presenting a fully Japanese menu without English translations.
The restaurant is located in the basement of Tomomitsu Building near Ikebukuro Station and accommodates around 18 diners. Note that each visitor must purchase at least one dish, and the menu is only in Japanese.
Each diner receives an individual heated iron plate to finish cooking their beef slices, creating an interactive eating experience where you control the exact level of doneness and temperature. This hands-on cooking method turns the meal into a personal culinary choice rather than a fixed preparation.
