Tanjong Jara Resort
Tanjong Jara Resort is a luxury hotel on Malaysia's east coast situated on a headland overlooking the South China Sea, with rooms featuring views of the water or lush gardens. The buildings draw inspiration from 17th-century Malay palaces, featuring wooden construction, curved roofs, and soft colors in green, beige, and brown, while rooms showcase traditional Malay furnishings, local fabrics, and private outdoor bathing areas.
The resort was established by YTL Luxury Resorts and embraces the philosophy of being unmistakably Malay, with architecture modeled after traditional Rumah Melayu houses. It gained international recognition for its design including the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, affirming its commitment to preserving and celebrating Malay design principles.
The name Tanjong Jara comes from the local language and refers to a headland or peninsula. This place embodies traditional Malay culture through its palace-inspired architecture and daily rituals like welcoming guests with flower-scented water and offering batik sarongs as mementos. Visitors experience living culture through cooking classes, interactions with local artisans who practice batik painting and bamboo weaving, and participation in traditional spa ceremonies.
The resort is located about one hour south of Kuala Terengganu and is easily reached by taxi from the airport, though some visitors fly into Kuantan and drive for two hours. Arrivals are welcomed with traditional gestures and hospitality, and it is best to plan activities such as turtle watching, cycling tours, and cooking classes in advance as the resort arranges these for guests.
The resort practices Sucimurni, a philosophy of life meaning purity and refreshment of the soul. Every aspect of the stay, from arrival to departure, is rooted in traditional Malay rituals designed for health and spiritual well-being.
