Museum of miniatures
The Museum of Miniatures is a small space within Strahov Monastery in Prague that displays microscopic artworks, most visible only through a magnifying glass or microscope. The collection holds approximately twenty-nine pieces created by three renowned artists from different countries, crafted from soft metals such as copper and gold.
The museum originated from a 1996 exhibition of microminiature art in Saint Petersburg that traveled to Prague a year later and proved so popular that a permanent collection was established in the monastery. This art form started in the 1980s and demands extreme precision, with each artist typically developing their own specialized techniques and tools.
The museum sits within Strahov Monastery, a place with deep spiritual roots and quiet surroundings. The tiny artworks displayed there reflect how people use incredible skill and patience to create beauty on the smallest possible scale.
The museum is conveniently located near Pohořelec, accessible by tram line 22 from Malostranská metro station. The rooms are compact, so a visit does not take long, though many visitors return multiple times to examine the different pieces more closely.
A bicycle made entirely of pure gold stands among the most remarkable pieces on display, representing one of the smallest working machines in the world. This tiny masterpiece demonstrates the extraordinary skill and patience required to create objects at such microscopic scales.
