Great Orme Mines, Bronze Age copper mine site in Llandudno, United Kingdom
The Great Orme Mines contain over 5 miles of underground tunnels and passageways, extending 220 feet below the surface through multiple excavated levels.
Archaeological evidence reveals that mining operations at Great Orme began 4000 years ago, during the same period when Stonehenge was under construction.
The site exhibits over 30,000 excavated animal bones, granite stone hammers, and Victorian mining artifacts that demonstrate evolving extraction methods across millennia.
Visitors should wear warm clothing for underground temperatures between 5-8°C and proper footwear for wet conditions during the 45-minute self-guided tour.
The mine tunnels include passages so narrow that historical evidence suggests only children aged 5 or 6 could access certain mineral extraction areas.
