Castle of Monti

The Castle of Monti is a medieval fortress featuring four angular towers, deep moats, and intricate stone carvings throughout its square layout. The structure sits in the center of Corigliano d'Otranto and combines defensive features with decorative stonework.

Between 1514 and 1519, Giovan Battista de' Monti converted the site into a military stronghold with reinforced defenses and heraldic details. In 1667, Francesco Trane added artistic elements including a stone balustrade adorned with mythological motifs.

The four towers feature sculptures of virtues and saints that served as protective symbols for the fortress. These carved figures reflect the spiritual and moral values that were important to its inhabitants.

Access is via Via Ferrovia 1 in the town center, and guided tours explain the architectural features and use of different spaces. Wear comfortable shoes as exploring the courtyard and towers involves multiple levels and varied terrain.

The 1667 balustrade features rare carved mythological creatures and floral ornaments that artistically transformed the fortress into a residence. These decorative details are often overlooked despite showing how the building evolved from a purely military structure into an elegant dwelling.
