Este Oeste, Italian and Japanese restaurant in Belém Cultural Centre, Portugal
Este Oeste is a restaurant inside the Belém Cultural Centre that runs two separate kitchens, one Italian and one Japanese, within the same dining room. One side of the space is set up for wood-fired pizzas and the other for sushi preparation.
The Belém Cultural Centre, where the restaurant is housed, opened in 1993 and was built to host the Portuguese presidency of the European Council. The complex sits near the Tagus River in an area that has been central to Lisbon's cultural life since long before the building arrived.
The name Este Oeste means East West in Portuguese, and it reflects the idea of placing two distant food traditions side by side. Guests can order from both menus at the same table, mixing Italian and Japanese dishes in a single meal.
The restaurant sits inside the cultural centre, so it is easy to combine a meal here with a visit to nearby attractions such as the Jerónimos Monastery or the MAAT museum. Booking ahead is a good idea, especially on weekends or if you are coming with a group.
Most restaurants that serve two cuisines keep them in separate rooms or buildings, but here both kitchens share the same open space and guests can watch both at once. It is possible to order a pizza and a plate of sushi for the same table at the same time.
