Model of Jerusalem in 2nd Temple Period, Historical scale model at Israel Museum, Jerusalem, Israel
This model recreates Jerusalem as it was during the Second Temple Period at a 1:50 scale, covering about 2,000 square meters to show how the city looked before its destruction. Every street, building, and architectural detail has been reconstructed to help visitors understand the original urban layout.
Professor Michael Avi-Jonah created this model based on the writings of the Roman historian Josephus, depicting the city before the year 70. It captures Jerusalem at the moment before the revolt against Roman rule escalated into war.
The model displays the neighborhoods where wealthy families lived in the Upper City, while the Lower City shows where artisans and workers built their homes. This spatial division reflects how society was organized during that period.
The model sits inside the Israel Museum near the Shrine of the Book and offers guided tours throughout the year. Staff members provide educational talks designed for different age groups to help explain the city's structure.
Workers built this display using authentic materials like Jerusalem stone and marble to create an accurate representation of the original city. The model has been revised multiple times over the decades to include new historical research and findings.
