The Fishmarket, Seafood restaurant in Newhaven, Edinburgh, Scotland
The Fishmarket is a seafood restaurant in Newhaven, Edinburgh, set inside a 19th-century building with jade green and white tiled walls and an open counter where fresh Scottish fish and shellfish are displayed. Diners can eat in or order takeaway from the same menu of locally sourced catches.
The building was originally a working fish market in the 19th century, when Newhaven was an active fishing port on the Firth of Forth. It reopened as a restaurant in 2018 after chef Roy Brett joined forces with Welch Fishmongers to revive the site.
Newhaven was once one of Scotland's busiest fishing ports, and this restaurant keeps that connection alive through its sourcing and decor. The tiled walls and open counter feel closer to a working fish stall than a formal dining room, which reflects how the neighborhood still sees itself.
The restaurant is on Pier Place, right next to Newhaven harbour, and easy to find on foot from the waterfront. Online ordering is available for takeaway, which can be useful when the harbour is busy.
The chefs here trained at Ondine, another seafood restaurant in Edinburgh known for its high standards, which shaped the way fish is cooked and served. Sitting near the window, visitors can watch fishing boats moving in and out of the harbour while they eat.
