Landskron Castle, Medieval castle and restaurant in Villach, Austria
Landskron Castle is a fortress complex situated on a hilltop at about 658 meters elevation within the Ossiach Tauern mountain range. The site contains a restaurant with terrace seating and various pathways that lead through different sections of the historical structure.
The fortress was founded in 1351 when Duke Albert II of Habsburg purchased it and transformed it into a key stronghold for the Bamberg prince-bishops. From that point forward, it remained an important position within this Carinthian region.
The restaurant within the castle walls serves traditional Austrian dishes while visitors enjoy views of the surrounding Alpine landscape through large windows. Local recipes have been passed down and remain central to what is offered here.
The site is best reached via a gradual uphill walk that includes some steeper sections. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since the paths are uneven and include steps in places.
The castle grounds host a birds of prey center where trained falconers conduct daily demonstrations with eagles and other raptors. This conservation program showcases the abilities of these birds in their natural setting.
