Adlerarena Burg Landskron, Bird of prey zoo at Landskron Castle, Villach, Austria.
Adlerarena Burg Landskron is a bird of prey center set within the ruins of a medieval castle on a hill above Villach, in the Austrian region of Carinthia. The grounds combine the old castle walls with open flight areas and offer a broad view across the valley below.
Landskron Castle was built in the medieval period as a regional stronghold and changed hands several times over the centuries. The ruins stood largely untouched for a long time before the site was opened to the public as a raptor center.
The falconry tradition practiced here is recognized by UNESCO as part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity, and visitors can see it in action during the shows. Handlers use centuries-old techniques to work with the birds, which makes the demonstrations feel connected to a long and living tradition.
A visit works best in the warmer months when the flight shows run on a regular schedule and the outdoor areas are fully accessible. The site is on a hill and explored on foot, so sturdy shoes are a good idea since the ground is uneven in places.
Some of the birds living on the grounds were raised after being found injured or orphaned and can no longer survive in the wild on their own. They stay on the site permanently, which is why they can often be seen up close outside of the formal shows.
