UnterWasserReich
UnterWasserReich is a museum and café in Schrems dedicated to exploring the wetlands, ponds, and water creatures of the Waldviertel region. The site covers about 3000 square meters and combines indoor exhibits with outdoor areas including aquariums, water basins, a stream course, and an otter enclosure.
UnterWasserReich was established to showcase the wetlands and moors of the Waldviertel region, which were largely created and shaped through human activity over generations. The facility documents how these landscapes developed through traditional fishing and farming practices.
The center reflects the importance of wetlands to the Waldviertel region, shaped by generations of local fishing and farming traditions. Visitors experience how these landscapes remain central to understanding the area's relationship with nature.
The facility is fully accessible with smooth pathways for wheelchairs and well-maintained areas both indoors and outdoors. Visitors should note the season runs from late March to All Saints' Day, with daily hours from 10 am to 5 pm, and groups should book ahead.
A viewing tower called Himmelsleiter, rising about 65 feet (20 meters), offers visitors a view over the Hochmoor Schrems and the water surface of the peat basin below. Since July 2025, the facility has featured a rare European pond turtle enclosure where visitors can observe these animals up close.
