Zamek Topacz, Medieval castle and hotel in Ślęza, Poland
Zamek Topacz is a castle and hotel in the village of Ślęza, not far from Wrocław, set within large grounds that include a lake with a beach, tennis courts, and biking paths. An automobile museum on the property holds a wide collection of Polish-made vehicles spanning many decades.
The complex dates back to a residential tower built in the 14th century, which over the following centuries was used among other things as a storage building. In the 20th century the estate was converted and eventually turned into a hotel.
The automobile museum on the grounds displays Polish-made vehicles from across the 20th century, including models that many local visitors remember from their childhood. Walking through the collection gives a real sense of how everyday life in Poland changed from one decade to the next.
The property sits outside Wrocław and can be reached by public transport, though having your own vehicle makes getting there easier. The hotel and the museum are separate parts of the estate, so it is worth checking in advance what is open to non-hotel guests.
The estate has rice paddies that were planted during the People's Republic of Poland, when the property was used for an agricultural experiment. They are still maintained today and are among the very few such fields found anywhere in Central Europe.
