Barraca, Mediterranean restaurant at Barceloneta beach, Barcelona, Spain
Barraca is a seafood restaurant on the Barceloneta waterfront promenade, with large windows that face the beach directly. The dining room is arranged on a single level, and most tables offer an open view of the sea.
The restaurant opened around 30 years ago as part of the Somos Esencia group, which focuses on seafood dining in coastal settings. It has remained open continuously since then and is one of the longer-standing addresses on the Barceloneta promenade.
The name Barraca means "hut" in Spanish, evoking the modest wooden shelters that once lined the Barcelona shore. Today the place draws both locals and visitors who come specifically for the rice and seafood dishes that are central to coastal Catalan cooking.
The restaurant sits directly on the waterfront promenade and is easy to reach on foot from the city center by walking along the beach. In busy periods it fills up fast, so booking ahead is a good idea before you arrive.
What appears on the menu each day depends on what local fishermen have brought to the fish market that morning, so the offering can change from one day to the next. Two visits a few days apart may offer a noticeably different selection of dishes.
