Talat Phlu food market, Traditional market in Thon Buri district, Thailand
Talat Phlu food market is a traditional food market in the Thon Buri district, running along the edge of Khlong Bangkok Yai canal and spreading through a web of narrow alleys lined with food stalls and local vendors. The stalls offer fresh produce, seafood, and cooked meals prepared on the spot.
The market grew after 1767, during the Thonburi Kingdom, when Chinese merchants set up trading posts along the canal. The routes they used shaped the layout of the alleys that visitors walk through today.
The shophouses lining the alleys follow a Thai-Chinese style, with wooden fretwork and stucco details that are easy to spot as you walk through. This type of architecture is now rare in Bangkok, and the market is one of the few places where it survives in everyday use.
The market can be reached by the BTS Silom Line, the State Railway, or several bus lines. Coming in the early morning gives you access to the freshest produce and a calmer pace before the day gets busy.
The name Talat Phlu comes from the betel plantations that once covered the area, which became the main wholesale point for betel leaves in the region. Today there is no trace of those plants, but the name carries the memory of a trade that once defined the whole neighborhood.
