Dakpark
Dakpark is a large park situated at an elevated level about nine meters above the surrounding streets in Rotterdam, built atop an old railway yard. It stretches roughly one kilometer and offers various areas with pathways, gardens, water features, a playground, community gardens, and seating areas for visitors.
Dakpark originated from a residents' initiative about 15 years ago, when community members worked together with city government and developers to reimagine the old railway yard. The park was officially opened in 2014 and demonstrates how industrial spaces can be transformed into places for people to enjoy.
The park is actively used and maintained by residents who regularly gather to tend the gardens and organize activities together. The community gardens and the enclosure with chickens and sheep show how this place brings the neighborhood together and invites people of all ages to work and relax as one.
The park provides access to different areas with pathways that are easy to walk and connect various sections together. There are seating areas, a playground, and a picnic area with grilling options, allowing visitors to move around on mostly paved walkways.
The park was built at nine meters high, offering visitors a completely different view of the neighborhood below. The elevated position provides entirely new perspectives on the city and creates a spatial experience that is not possible in flat parks.
