Collingwood Children's Farm is a not-for-profit working farm in the Abbotsford neighborhood of Melbourne, sitting along the Birrarung river. The grounds include animal pens, vegetable gardens, an apiary, a barn used for activities, and a café that serves food made from local produce.
The land has been farmed since 1838, which makes this the oldest working farm in the state of Victoria. It sits on the country of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people, the traditional custodians of this land.
On Saturday mornings, part of the grounds turns into a farmers market where local vendors sell fresh produce, eggs, and flowers. The barns and animal pens are open throughout the day, letting visitors watch farm chores up close.
The barn is a good first stop, as the daily activity schedule is posted there. Wear sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothes, since the grounds cover open grass and dirt paths.
Even though the farm is inside the city, it sells egg-laying hens to people who want to keep them at home. The farm also holds a Winter Solstice Bonfire each year, a gathering that draws families from across the city around an open fire.
