Kitee Zoo, zoo in Kitee, Finland
Kitee Zoo is a facility in northern Finland that spans roughly 10 hectares and is reached by a two-kilometer walking path. About 50 different animal species live there, from larger mammals to smaller northern inhabitants.
The zoo opened in 1996 and received its first major expansion just a year later. Since its start, it has worked to document and protect northern animal species.
The facility displays animals that live naturally in northern regions, including bears and lynxes that visitors encounter along the walking paths. These species represent what people in Finland connect with their local wildlife.
The grounds are located near road 6 and are therefore easy to reach by car. Visitors find a hotel and restaurant on site, making a longer visit straightforward.
The zoo is the only place in Finland where yaks are kept. Additionally, there are specialized enclosures for completely black Ayam Gemani chickens from India, a breed found nowhere else in the country.
