Tiergarten Sonneberg, Park and zoo in Sonneberg, Germany
Tiergarten Sonneberg is a small park and zoo on the edge of a wooded area in the town of Sonneberg, Germany. The grounds cover roughly 3 hectares and hold animals of around 35 species in open enclosures.
In the 1970s, the site began as a small enclosure for wild animals. It officially opened as a zoo in 1985 and has since added new enclosures and animal species over time.
Each animal enclosure has an information board that shares facts about the species on display. The petting zoo section is a draw for children, who can feed and touch tame animals directly.
The main entrance is on Waldstraße, and the paths inside are easy to follow on foot. The zoo closes in January and February, so checking the current opening hours before visiting is a good idea.
Just next to the park stands a mountain inn called Blockhütte, where visitors can sit down for local food after their walk. The park also sits at around 650 meters above sea level, which gives the surrounding trees a noticeably fresh feel.
