Schmetterlingshaus, Butterfly house and zoo in Jonsdorf, Germany
The Schmetterlingshaus is a building with a tropical environment where approximately 200 butterflies from about 35 species fly freely among visitors in indoor gardens. The facility also contains a saltwater aquarium, reptile collections, snakes, and insects displayed alongside the butterfly exhibits.
The facility opened in 2010 as a project supported by the Krefeld Zoo Friends Association. This founding reflected growing interest in educating the public about conservation and tropical species diversity in the region.
Butterflies hold symbolic meaning across cultures as creatures of transformation, and experiencing them up close here connects education with direct nature observation. The setting teaches respect for tropical biodiversity through hands-on interaction rather than distant viewing.
The venue is open daily throughout the year, including holidays and weekends, making it accessible at any time. The indoor tropical environment is climate-controlled and comfortable regardless of outdoor weather, ideal for visits on cooler days.
The butterfly pupae come from sustainable breeders in other countries, meaning visitors observe creatures whose breeding supports rainforest protection efforts. This connection between local tourism and global conservation is rarely discussed but fundamentally shapes how the facility operates.
