Parco Zoo di Poppi
Parco Zoo di Poppi is a small zoo in the town of Poppi specializing in European animal species set within open grounds and natural surroundings. The park features multiple enclosures designed to mimic natural habitats, allowing visitors to observe mammals, birds, and reptiles up close along wide, accessible paths.
The zoo was established in the 20th century by a veterinarian named Roberto Mattoni and has since focused on European fauna, particularly animals from the Casentino region. The facility continues as a private project managed by the Mattoni family and has grown and adapted over the decades.
The zoo takes its name from the town of Poppi where it is located. Visitors can observe how European animals live in designed habitats and gain insight into the wildlife that belongs to the Casentino region.
The pathways are wide and easy to navigate with benches positioned throughout for rest breaks, and feeding opportunities are available using prepared food that can be purchased upon entry. Visitors can typically see the entire park in a few hours and have the option to bring their own food for picnicking in designated areas.
The zoo hosts special bird of prey demonstrations on Sundays where raptors display their natural hunting skills and behaviors for visitors to observe up close. These shows provide insight into how these birds move and interact in ways that typical enclosure viewing cannot capture.
