Bergbau-Technik-Park
The Bergbau-Technik-Park is an outdoor museum in Großpösna that displays the history of coal mining in the region. The roughly 5.4-hectare site features two massive machines from the former Espenhain pit, along with historical equipment, railway systems, and conveyor technology that once operated in the mines.
The site was once an active open-pit coal mine called Espenhain that provided jobs and resources for the region. After the mine closed, former workers founded an organization in 2002 to preserve the two massive machines and establish the museum, which opened to visitors in 2012.
The park honors the memory of miners who worked in the region through displays of their personal items, tools, and photographs. Former mine workers lead tours on weekends, sharing stories about daily life underground that help visitors understand the human side of coal extraction.
The museum operates from March through November, Wednesday to Sunday, and is easily reached by car via the A72 highway or by public transportation from nearby bus stops. Visitors can explore the park independently using information signs or join guided tours led by former miners on weekends.
The two main machines were built in 1985 and 1986 and weigh over 1,000 tons each, demonstrating the power required for coal extraction. These giants now stand as monuments to the achievements of mining technology and the workers who operated them.
