Miniaturpark "Die Kleine Sächsische Schweiz"
The Miniaturpark "Die Kleine Sächsische Schweiz" is a park in Wehlen featuring over 60 detailed models of rock formations, castles, and structures from the Saxon Switzerland region. The site covers about 8,000 square meters (86,000 square feet) and displays famous landmarks like the Bastei bridge, Königstein fortress, and Lilienstein mountain all at small scale.
The park opened in 1996 and became a popular destination for families soon after. It sits at the foot of an old sandstone quarry where blocks were extracted for centuries to build structures throughout the region, linking the park to the area's long history of stone carving.
The park reflects how sandstone shaped the region's identity, as it was quarried here for centuries and used in countless buildings. The miniature scenes show daily life and the landscape together, helping visitors understand how closely the people here live with the dramatic hills and valleys that surround them.
The park operates from April through October and features wheelchair-accessible paths throughout the grounds. Dogs on leashes are welcome, and parking is available nearby, with the best visiting time being spring through autumn when the grounds are green and sunny.
The park operates a working miniature railway with a track about 900 meters (3,000 feet) long that uses a replica of a historic Saxon locomotive. Visitors can also pilot radio-controlled ships on a small pond, creating hands-on experiences that go beyond simply viewing the models.
