Changcheng 349, type 033 diesel submarine
Changcheng 349 is a diesel-powered Romeo-class submarine built in the 1980s and now displayed on a platform above the waterline for visitors to explore. The long, narrow vessel displays characteristic features including torpedo tubes and a small conning tower that demonstrate how these underwater craft functioned.
The submarine was built in Guangzhou during the 1980s and entered service in 1982, serving nearly three decades in the Chinese Navy. After being decommissioned in 2011, it was converted into a museum and is now the only submarine of its kind in Zhejiang Province open to visitors.
The name Changcheng means "Long Wall" and connects military tradition with maritime heritage. The boat has become a familiar landmark where families and locals gather to understand how naval service protected their region.
The site requires no special admission fees and is easily accessible for visitors wishing to walk around the platform and explore the interior spaces. It helps to wear sturdy footwear since pathways are tight and movement inside is confined due to the vessel's narrow compartments.
The submarine was originally designed after Soviet models but was specially adapted for tropical conditions since early systems proved unreliable in warm waters. These modifications reveal how Chinese engineers solved practical problems encountered during actual operations.
