Katara Pigeon Towers, Pigeon towers in Doha, Qatar
The Katara Pigeon Towers are two tall, tapered structures in Doha, Qatar, with sand-colored surfaces covered in small round holes and thin wooden rods. They stand side by side on a paved area with a green lawn nearby, each topped with a rounded roof and a slightly wider base ringed by a low curved wall.
The original towers were demolished in February 2022 to be rebuilt with improved engineering while keeping the same shape. This followed a similar renovation of towers in the northern area of Katara, ensuring the structures remain true to their traditional appearance.
The towers have become a symbol of Katara, often photographed and used in publications to represent the area. Their design with holes and rods is typical of traditional pigeon towers, and they continue to be a meeting point for visitors and locals alike.
Visitors can find these towers in the Katara Cultural Village, with the pair on the eastern side near the sea and another near the mosque. The area is easy to explore on foot, and the ground is level, making it accessible for wheelchairs, as indicated by a sign near the base.
The towers are not just decorative; they were originally built to house pigeons, and the small holes and rods provide nesting spots for the birds. This functional design is a reminder of how such structures were once common in the region for collecting pigeon droppings used as fertilizer.
