Oedo Botania, Botanical garden on Geoje Island, South Korea
Oedo Botania is a botanical garden on a small island off the coast of Geoje-si, in the south of South Korea. Maintained paths wind through flower beds, tree groves, and themed plant sections that cover most of the island.
The island was once a bare rocky outcrop exposed to wind and sea for decades. Starting in the 1970s, a private couple began planting trees and gradually shaped it into the garden that exists today.
The garden is one of the most popular spots in South Korea for marriage proposals, and many couples travel specifically to mark the occasion here. Small pavilions and shaded corners scattered among the plants give the place a gentle, unhurried feel.
The site is only accessible by boat, and the crossing from the Geoje coast already offers open sea views worth the trip. Wear comfortable shoes, as the paths are well paved but include some slopes and steps throughout the garden.
The entire garden was created by a single private couple over several decades, without any public funding. The island itself is so compact that a slow walk around the whole site takes little more than an hour.
