The Cable Car in Tongyeong is a gondola ride that climbs Mireuksan mountain, offering views of the coast and the scattered islands of the surrounding sea. The glass cabins allow passengers to look out in all directions along a track that stretches close to 2 km (1.2 mi).
Mireuksan has long held a special place in the region, with old watchtowers built on its slopes to guard the coast from sea threats. The cable car was later built to make the summit reachable without a steep hike through the forest.
The ride may be paused on very windy days, so it is worth checking conditions before heading out. At the top station, wooden decks lead to several viewpoints where you can look out over the sea and islands.
The name Mireuksan comes from the Korean word for the future Buddha Maitreya, and the mountain is said in old stories to be the place where this Buddha will descend to earth. On a clear day, the viewpoints at the top allow a glimpse of distant Japanese islands on the horizon.
