Space Walk, Tourist attraction in Hwanho Park, Pohang, South Korea
Space Walk is a large walkable steel sculpture set in Hwanho Park in Pohang, South Korea. The curved structure runs over 300 meters long and rises around 25 meters above the ground, offering open views of the coast and the city below.
The project began in 2018 when Posco and the city of Pohang agreed to create a new landmark for Hwanho Park and encourage visitors to the area. Two German artists, Heike Mutter and Ulrich Genth, developed the design after spending time in Pohang studying the local area, including the steelworks and the coastline.
Space Walk gets its name from the sensation of floating that walkers feel as they move along its curves. The steel material pays a direct tribute to Pohang's identity as a steel city, making the piece feel rooted in the place it stands.
Access to the walkway is by stairs, so the structure is not fully suitable for visitors with limited mobility. It is worth checking conditions before you go, as the path can close during strong wind or rain.
All the steel used to build the walkway came directly from Posco, the steelworks visible from the top of the structure. This means that standing on the path, you are looking down at the very factory that produced the metal beneath your feet.
